Misc. Monday - 12-5-11 - The X Factor vs. American Idol
So, I have done this before. I have taken a step back from the sports scene to write about reality TV. Last time I did this, I was nearly lynched by my buddies, but I'm sure there are enough of you music fans out there who watch The X Factor and American Idol, that this blog will reach just as many people as a sports blog.
So have you been watching The X Factor? Local musician Josh Krajcik has soared to the top five as everyone in the tri-county area suddenly claims they know him personally. Krajcik has had several performances in which producer and judge Simon Cowell has proclaimed as "bloody" awesome. This past week when Josh sang Michael Jackson's Dirty Diana, we all felt like we needed to take a bath, it was so disgusting.
Along with Krajcik, who I do believe is the only real artist left in the competition, Rachel Crow (Boulder, Colo.), Chris Rene (Santa Cruz, Calif.), Melanie Amaro (Sunrise, Fla.) and Marcus Canty (Bowie, Md.) round out the top five heading into this week.
And every one of these top five acts is a disaster.
Before this goes any further, like that previous blog I was chastised for, I don't claim I know a ton about music and what is classified as a good performance and what is not. But I do know, that compared to American Idol, The X Factor is an absolute joke and is a stain on how a singing competition should be carried out.
Also, you heard it here first, Drew Ryniewicz, who was eliminated last week, will become a successful artist and be in the music industry years beyond any other competitor in The X Factor competition. Yes, including the beloved Josh Krajcik.
Not only did Drew have the best voice in the competition, she didn't have to utilize a risque stage show to captivate the audience, which is how it should be. Which is also why American Idol has this reality singing competition show thing down, and The X Factor is more like professional wrestling, where the contestants who put on the best show win, not necessarily the ones who have the most talent.
Let's start with Rachel Crow. The X Factor's age limit is 13, which is way too low. Rachel Crow is an actress, not a singer. She needs to be the replacement for Miranda Cosgrove on iCarly, instead of attempting to be a singer. The fact that anyone thinks she is better than Drew makes me think that Americans are obsessed with puffy hair.
How about Chris Rene? Who is voting for this guy? I have heard better karaoke songs sung at 2 a.m. by people who have no business singing… ever. Doesn't it seem like Chris is just a local high school talent show act? Yes, it does seem like that, because that is all he is. He is no million-dollar artist. It's a shame this guy is still in the competition.
Melanie Amaro. Now this girl can sing. Other than Drew, this is the only other act in the competition that is a genuine singer. Every note is heartfelt and meaningful, and her voice carries through the audience. She also doesn't need the lights and scantily clad dancers to be interesting. I'll be rooting for her the rest of the way!
Marcus Canty, our Usher wannabe, needs to find some originality. Dude, your act has been done before… get a new one.
Now, for Josh. Come on man, your last performance felt like a Pussycat Doll show gone bad. Stick to the piano or YOUR choices, bro. Don't listen to Nicole. Come on, who would?
What these five acts bring and what Drew brings is so totally different. I commend Drew and Simon for keeping her act the same. Drew and Simon will definitely have the last laugh.
As far as The X Factor in general, this show should be ashamed of itself. Parading these horrible acts with women dancing all over the stage should not even be allowed on TV. At least American Idol keeps the show tasteful, for the most part, and most importantly, keeps it a singing contest.
If Drew competed in American Idol, she would win. Hands down. Not only is she going to be the next Adele, she is the total package, can captivate any audience and will make millions. Can anyone say Chris Daughtry?
