Holmes County has moved from a moderate rate of transmission to a substantial transmission rate, and as a result, the Holmes County General Health District (HCGHD) is strongly recommending that everyone, regardless of vaccination status, wear a mask while indoors and in crowded spaces. This recommendation follows the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance for an area with substantial community spread of COVID-19.

Over the last seven days, the county positivity rate has increased from 5.98% to 8.62%. Additionally, as of Aug. 11, only 17.9% of eligible Holmes County residents — 12 years of age and older — are fully vaccinated.

The delta variant has a higher viral load than previous strains, making it more contagious and more dangerous. While vaccination is still the best tool to prevent severe illness, hospitalization, and death, masking is another protective layer that can be added to prevent community spread.

“Cases are on the rise and with Holmes County being a popular tourist destination and home to many popular events, it is important that we keep our county open and safe. Following these recommendations will ensure that,” said Health Commissioner Michael Derr. “This recommendation isn’t political or controlling; it’s simply showing that we care for one another and our community.”
