Eureka Machine Shop has serviced coal and brick plants throughout the area for 111 years. As of Oct. 1, The Belden Brick Company purchased Eureka, with the hopes of expanding their overall operations. “It seemed like a good fit and a tremendous opportunity for Belden Brick,” said Mike Sigman, general manager at the brick giant. Eureka Machine Shop has provided their services to Belden Brick for years, and Tom Bearducci, owner of Eureka Machine Shop, was on board for the buy out, and will remain with the company for several more years before retiring. “We have done a lot of maintenance work for Belden, and being a large brick company, they have a lot of work that is required,” Bearducci explained. Belden Brick became interested in Eureka Machine Shop when Bearducci expressed the desire to sell. Although Belden Brick does a lot of in-house work, some must be outsourced and Eureka is one of the companies that assist in daily operations. With the recent acquisition, Eureka Machine Shop is now able to lower the cost to mill and make parts for the brick company. “This is a step in the right direction to enable [Belden Brick] to continue to perform,” Bearducci said. Eureka will also operate under the same name and continue to see clients outside of Belden Brick. “Eureka has, over the years, done just about everything, from servicing steam locomotives, contributing to the war effort during WWII, and building fire trucks in the ’60s and ’70s,” Sigman said. “We’re going to continue doing the quality of business that Eureka is known for and just hope that we let more people know we’re here.” And according to Sigman, Belden Brick has extensive plans to expand business and bring more production within the near future and into next year. Currently, Belden Brick operates six plants in Tuscarawas County, with more than 500 people employed throughout. They are the sixth largest brick manufacturer and the largest family owned brick company in the United States. “Brick sales are down right now, but we’re optimistic for next year, just like everybody else,” Sigman explained. “Belden Brick is a good company to work for and I think this is just another venture in hopes of expanding operations and saving us some money.”
