Where would you like to work? More than 14 local businesses hiring in Holmes County will be accepting applications and resumes Wednesday, April 16 at the Carlisle Inn, Walnut Creek, from noon to 6 p.m. The businesses, representing local industries, are looking to fill positions in health care, support staff, hospitality, technical and industry, offering part time, full time and seasonal hours. Bonnie Coblentz, Holmes County Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau marketing coordinator, said the job fair has come about due to the county’s low unemployment rate. Unemployment in Holmes County currently stands at 4.6 percent, according to numbers from the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics. The number is well below the state average of seven percent. With so many county residents working, Coblentz said, many local employers are having to search beyond county borders to find qualified job applicants. “The job fair came about because the (Amish Country) lodging council found that they were struggling to find good employees,” Coblentz said. “They thought it might be beneficial to get all the industries together where they can meet as many candidates as possible in a short time. The question is, will the right people for the jobs come.” The hospitality industry is particularly interested in hiring locals, Coblentz said. Knowledge about the area’s numerous tourist attractions is a plus for servers, front desk clerks and other workers who interact directly with visitors to the county. “Locals are aware of what the area has to offer,” Coblentz said. “It almost takes a lifetime of living in Holmes County to know what is out there and how to direct someone there.” Coblentz said students and recent graduates are encouraged to attend. The job fair is a good place to see what kind of jobs the county offers, Coblentz said, as well as sharpen interview skills. “It’s a chance to see where the opportunities are in Holmes County. We’d love for our kids who go away for higher learning to come back with the skills they’ve learned,” Coblentz said. “These businesses are going to continue to expand and need skilled workers.” Representatives of human resources will be on hand to evaluate resumes and general interview skills, Coblentz said, a further plus for persons new to the workforce. Coblentz said it will be up to the individual companies whether they will conduct job interviews on site. Some may just collect resumes, hand out applications and provide information regarding their employment needs. Job seekers should bring several copies of their resume, Coblentz said. The following companies have registered for the job fair. More are expected, and any business looking to hire can sign on up to the day of the event, Coblentz said. Berlin Grande Hotel: Housekeeping/laundry, guest service representatives, general manager. Coblentz Technology: Computer and network technician.
