At more than 150 years old, the building on the northeast corner of what was once Shanesville is now the Honey Bee Café, serving farm to table cuisine to residents and visitors of Sugarcreek.

Sugarcreek’s Honey Bee Café offers made from scratch, healthy, mid-western inspired fare for breakfast, lunch and dessert.

The Honey Bee is a gathering place for friends and families. Settle in for a fresh, satisfying meal or come by for a cup of great coffee and delicious cinnamon chip scone, a house specialty.

Whether you have time to stay and relax for a while or if you need a dozen meals to go, the Honey Bee staff will be ready with exceptional service.

Owner Kathy Kimble grew up in rural Harrison County. The youngest of 11 children, she had always hoped to one day own her own coffee shop.

The small-town girl found her way to Columbus where she spent 20 years eventually ending up in the construction business before making her way back to the region where her dream would be realized when she decided to renovate the former hardware store on the northeast corner of the square in what was once historic Shanesville.

Kimble would come to learn the building surprisingly was once home to her great-grandmother.

The three-story structure was 150 years old and in need of a lot of attention. Working with an Amish crew she knew from her construction days, Kimble slowly transformed the old structure with the sagging front porch into a welcoming café the community could be proud of.

The Honey Bee opened for business in July 2014 with a focus on farm to table casual cuisine that celebrates local farmers and producers.

“We purchase our produce from Sweetwater Farms in Sugarcreek and Boltz Family Farms in Stonecreek. Our honey is harvested locally by Bosler Honey Bees and we purchase our meats and cheeses from a local supplier. But what we’re really excited about this year is our coffee,” Kimble said. “This is our first year to serve Counter Culture Coffee and I have to say we get raving reviews everyday. It feels good to work with a coffee roaster that is transparent about the farmers they purchase their beans from and open to visits and training at their facilities. If you haven’t tried our coffee yet, stop in today for an Iced Honeycomb Latte or a steaming cup of Big Trouble. You’re going to love it.”

Because of the importance of locally sourced ingredients, the Honey Bee is able to offer customers the freshest house-made soups, salads and sandwiches along with all-day breakfast and a wide variety of gluten-free items on their menu complete with desserts including honey walnut baklava, a recipe Kimble has perfected over time.

“There are plenty of recipes for baklava,” Kimble said. “What makes ours so good is that it is sweetened with only honey.”

Kimble’s love of honey and the café’s name is a tribute to her father who kept bees as a hobby when she was growing up.

While the Honey Bee closes briefly each year in late fall, their honey walnut baklava is available year-round and can be shipped anywhere.
