The Tuscarawas County Commissioners, through Resolution, have made David Lane a permanent employee with benefits on their maintenance crew. A collaboration between Starlight Enterprises Inc. CEO Cassie Elvin and Jack Hupp, Tuscarawas County Courthouse maintenance supervisor, resulted in this employment outcome.

“Starlight advocates for an inclusive workforce by hiring people with disabilities,” Elvin said. “We want to make employers aware that through hiring people with disabilities, it helps production and retention go up.”

Starlight is offering employers a chance to see people’s talents and abilities through work experiences and individual job assessments provided by life coaches from Starlight’s employment department and integrated vocational services area.

Hupp said, “We have been able to see David at work and review his skills. He was personable and good at his job. We happened to have an opening, which provided an opportunity for David to move into a permanent job position here at the courthouse."

"It was a win-win for everyone,” Elvin said.

Lane also was quick to add that he was honored to be hired as a permanent employee for the county.

Starlight is working on breaking stereotypes and raising awareness to promote people with disabilities into various types of vocations while meeting the needs of community employers.
