Most of us can say we have enjoyed a meal at The Manor Restaurant. Whether it was a big family meal after church on Sunday or a casual business lunch, theyve been serving moderately priced meals for lunch and dinner since 1961 when original owners Jim and Mary Jane Markino first opened the doors.
Today, The Manor Restaurant is owned and operated by the Mike and Ann Marie Davis family and remains a favorite of locals and those passing through the region. A lot has changed since 1961 and The Manor has kept up with those changes, offering an expanded menu that still features the delicious chicken for which the restaurant has become so well known.
In addition, youll find mouthwatering homemade soups, sandwiches, salads, steak, seafood and the newest addition, chicken wings in a variety of flavors that include garlic, hot, barbecue, a sweet and spicy Bayou Cajun and a sweet Szechuan style sauce. Delicious desserts from Steinecks Bakery add to the appeal of this classic restaurant that believes in old-fashioned hospitality.
The Manor Restaurant has banquet facilities that can accommodate up to 200 people on the weekends and 80 people during the week. Banquets are served family style and reservations are required.
We have tons of regulars and theyre really going to enjoy this, said owner Mike Davis. Ten years ago we celebrated our 40th anniversary and we had a great time and so did the customers.
The restaurant was purchased from the Markinos, Ann Maries parents, in 1988. I had been a teacher and had worked for General Motors. It was a good opportunity for us, said Mike Davis. All of our children have worked here. Our daughter, Natalie, is a senior at Tuscarawas Central Catholic now and she continues to work as her schedule allows.
The Davises also have two sons. Nick resides in Dover and is employed as an architect at MKC Associates, Inc. at New Philadelphia. Tony resides in Columbus and is a graduate of the Pontifical College Josephinum. He is continuing to study to become a Roman Catholic Priest.
Regular customers have come to know the Davises and many of their longtime employees. Annette Sweet has been serving at The Manor for 34 years. I started this job when I was 14 years old. I didnt expect I would be here 34 years later, but it is a great place to work and I have been able to raise a family because of the flexibility in scheduling, said Sweet. I got the job because my dad was a friend of Mr. Markino. It seems everyone here is a friend or family member. At different points my son, brother and sister have worked here. My niece works here now, said Sweet.
Weve been very fortunate to have such great employees, said Mike Davis. We hire a lot of high school aged kids and its good for them to get experience. We have about 25 employees right now.
Things have changed a lot since I have worked here. When I first started we had to wear all white, crystal white with stockings and everything. Mike has let us make some changes and our uniforms are a little more casual nowadays. We wear purple through the week and black on the weekends, and no more stockings, said Sweet. In 34 years I have gotten to know a lot of great customers.
