Who are the Ukrainian Amish? Where did they come from? Are they really Amish? The Ukrainian Amish will be presented by Edward A. Kline at the Amish and Mennonite Heritage Center (AMHC), Berlin, on Tuesday, April 13, at 7 p.m.
The separatist group in western Ukraine was labeled as Amish by the national media when discovered by the surrounding society in recent years. The colony lives in an isolated area near the Romanian border. The group pursues many counter-culture values similar to the North American Amish. Ed Kline, a local Amish businessman and historian, and others visited the Ukrainian colonies in the last 10 months and developed contacts with the group. Kline will speak and illustrate his visit with experiences of the time he spent among them.
The report provides an update of recent communications with the group. It will follow up on reports as first presented last fall. All are welcome to the general meeting to be held in the mural hall at the AMHC.
