East Chippewa Church of the Brethren, located north of Orrville, recently announced the appointment of an interim pastor to fill the pulpit with the recent retirement of former pastor Rev. Delbert Kettering. Dr. David Hall, of Hartville, will take over while the church undergoes a search process for a permanent full-time pastor. He will assume the pulpit on Sunday, August 22. “I am genuinely excited about coming to East Chippewa,” stated Hall. “East Chip seems to me be a warm, family-oriented place that will be an exciting place to serve and grow with the congregation.” Hall is a retired minister from the Hartville Mennonite Church where he served as the senior pastor for 16 years. Before coming home to Hartville he was the adjunct professor at Winebrenner Theological Seminary in Findlay for two years. He was also an administrator and instructor at the Swift Current Bible Institute in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, Canada for 15 years. Prior to being in Canada he was in Gindiri, Nigeria for four years as a religious knowledge teacher. Hall grew up in the Hartville area on a vegetable truck farm. He graduated from Malone College in Canton with a B.A. in psychology. He received his master’s in peace studies and a master’s in divinity from Goshen Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Ind. He also has a master’s and a Ph.D in formative spirituality from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa. He and his wife, Carol, have two married daughters and four grandchildren. He enjoys golfing, fishing and jogging. Hall also looks at this time of transition for the church as a positive challenge. “Transition times for us individually and congregationally are times of opportunity and challenge,” he commented. “In speaking with some of the leadership at East Chip about the vision and direction for the church, the image of a bridge emerges. I hope to support and help the congregation build on the positive ministries of the past. “Where people need to say goodbye to past ministries I want to stand with them and encourage them. A part of the bridge image is that we also arrive on the other side. I hope to work with the congregation in a way that it will welcome a new minister in such a way that that minister and the congregation can grow together personally and in ministry together. “It seems to me that my task will be to help the congregation give shape to their vision of ministry. A second objective would be to help develop the leadership and potential leaders. Third, through teaching, preaching and modeling I hope we will be able to strengthen the families of East Chip.” For more information on East Chippewa Church of the Brethren, call 330-669-3262 or visit the East Chippewa Church of the Brethren website at http://www.eastchip.wordpress.com.
