Gary Pittis, owner/operator of Dairy Queen of Uhrichsville, has been named a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) in recognition of his commitment to serving the world community. Named for the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones, the fellowship is the foundation’s highest honor. The award is given in recognition of commitment to humanitarian service. Pittis, a member of the Clayland Lions Club since 1998, recently received a finely crafted plaque and lapel pin acknowledging his dedication to the foundation’s humanitarian goals. As a Melvin Jones Fellow, he becomes a part of the growing network of individuals who are committed to improving the quality of life for people locally and in communities around the world. Pittis joins the following current Clayland Lions who have been honored as Melvin Jones Fellows: Rob Murry, Rex Hostettler, Don Wright, Bill McGinnis, Tom Edwards, Tom Wolfe, and Dr. Dan Peck. Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.3 million members. As the charitable arm of the association, LCIF makes grants for vital community and global projects that meet a wide range of humanitarian needs. LCIF’s programs unite approximately 46,000 Lions Clubs in 205 countries and geographical areas in a worldwide endeavor to significantly reduce preventable blindness. Most recently, in response to the devastating earthquake in Haiti, LCIF and Lions Hope for Haiti have mobilized more than $1.5 million to provide relief and hope for the people of Haiti. The Clayland Lions Club has 32 members and meets on the first and third Wednesdays of each month, at 6 p.m., at Fratello’s Restaurant in Uhrichsville.
