One of the Tuscarawas County Public Library System’s book clubs, Girls’ Night Out, will be changing its location and meeting dates starting in January. The club, which had previously met on the first Monday of the month at the Daily Grind, off West High Avenue, will now be meeting on the second Thursday of each month at Uncle Primo’s, 435 Minnich Ave. in New Philadelphia. The group will convene at 7 p.m. Book selections for the club, which launched in September, focus on “chick lit,” a popular literary genre that focuses on the issues of modern women with humor, style, and candid honesty. New York Times best-sellers such as Bridget Jones’s Diary, The Devil Wears Prada, and Confessions of a Shopaholic are all classified as chick lit titles. “Chick lit has really experienced a boom since the release of Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary in 1996,” said Andrea Legg, the extension and technical services manager, who facilitates the club’s book discussions. “Most of the characters and plot elements in chick lit titles mirror current societal trends, and readers really relate to that aspect of the genre.” Upcoming book club selections for the spring include the following titles: The Next Thing on My List (Jill Smolinski) on Jan. 13; After You (Julie Buxbaum) on Feb. 10; Little Earthquakes (Jennifer Weiner) on March 10; 29 (Adena Halpern) on April 14; and The Queen of Babble (Meg Cabot) on May 12. Multiple copies of each month’s title are available for checkout and are on display near the circulation desk at the library’s New Philadelphia location, 121 Fair Ave. NW.
