2023 SWCD accomplishments

2023 was a very successful year. 2023 saw the completion of our first year managing the flood plain for the county commissioners. Tusc SWCD continued to expand its offerings of technical programs, workshops and clinics we rolled out in 2022. Our goal is to educate and serve our customers and community. It was a very exciting year as staff came together to bring numerous educational opportunities to the county residents.

Technical

Technical assistance is provided to Tuscarawas County residents in many forms such as soil- and water-related problems, feasibility of onsite soils for construction, soil-saving practices (tile, spring developments, filter strips), recommending environmentally sound options for manure storage, feedlot runoff and more. Working hand in hand with Natural Resource Conservation Service, we were able to bring in over $475,000 to Tuscarawas County this year alone.

Technical projects this year included the following:

—2,900 acres of cover crops approved to be applied to the land through the cover crop program.

—Heavy-use pads.

—Pipeline.

—Fencing.

—Rotational grazing.

—Volunteer Nutrient Management Plans.

—Conservation planning.

—Conservation easement.

Programs/events

—Tree packing by SWCD staff with a drive-thru at our office.

—Annual meeting with elections of officers.

—Forestry Workshop Series.

—Soils Workshop Series.

—Fifth-grade field day for Garaway Local Schools.

—Legislative Tour.

—EOGC participation for multiple workshops.

—Fair booth at Tuscarawas County Fair.

—Teacher workshop for the Solid Waste District.

—Assisted with the Ohio Tree Farm of the Year open house.

—Sponsored EPA wetlands meeting.

—Participated in career day activities for Garaway and Dover high schools.

Other

—Conducted CAUV inspections in cooperation with Tuscarawas County Auditor’s Office and updated CAUV soils list for the auditor’s office.

—Administered Floodplain Management Program for the Tuscarawas County commissioners.

—Continued working with/providing support and soils expertise to the Regional Planning Commission.

This is not an all-inclusive list, just some highlights of our accomplishments.

On behalf of the Tuscarawas Soil & Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors and the entire SWCD staff, we would like to thank our county commissioners for their support.
