Life really is for the living

“One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it’s worth watching.”
—Gerard Way
I remember the second column I wrote; it was call “Dead or Alive, Which Are You?” I was still new, so I told people I was beginning to write for the paper. I had mixed emotions about that, but I just wanted to see if people were interested or not. My store manager at the time introduced me to her daughter and told her I write for the paper. She asked me what I wrote lately, and I told her I just wrote a column called “Dead or Alive, Which Are You?”
“Is it about zombies?” she asked.
I was kind of shook. “No, it’s about if you are really living or not.”
Looking back now, I realize a zombie movie was very popular at the box office that summer.
Far too many people are just living but are not really alive. They are just going through the motions with no clear end in sight. I am convinced life is not something in between birth and death. No, life is something we live so that we have peace when we die. I don’t think anybody wants to die with a life they just endured. I know I want to make the most out of my life.
I sometimes watch a man on YouTube who travels around the world. I would love to do that. I don’t know many places I will get to, but I can always watch his videos and dream. There will always be things we don’t have, places we would like to go but never get the opportunity. However, what do we have the opportunity to do? Let’s flip the cup. Instead of thinking about the many things we don’t have, what about all we have been given? I heard about a man who used to worry about having good shoes — until he met a man with no feet.
I truly believe there is always someone worse off than we are. No, I can’t prove it, but our attitude has a lot to do with how we look at our life. One reason our attitude is so hard to manage is because we let life happen to us. We live a busy life with lots of demands on our time, but I am convinced we need to make time for rejuvenation.
I love to drive around with Stacey, looking at the trees, the sunset and, in a few weeks, all the Christmas lights. It is about slowing down and noticing the everyday things. Starting today, try finding three things every day to be grateful for.
