Battle for thermostat is now on

Our house and I have come to the conclusion we both dislike intensely cold winds. Cold, rainy weather is uncomfortable enough without the wind.
Coming inside from taking out the trash a few days ago, I looked in the mirror and scared myself. My wind-blown hair was standing on end, my face was red from the cold and my glasses were foggy — not my best look. Taller Half couldn’t help himself, and he laughed at me. Bless his heart. Even I had to admit my new wind-do was less than flattering.
I don’t remember it getting this cold this early last year. But my brain does have a tendency not to hang onto unpleasant memories. A couple of my neighbors agree it seems colder earlier this year. What happened to global warming? With all the dangerous conditions global warming can inflict on our poor planet, we had all hoped at least one good thing could result — a milder, warmer winter for us cold-weather states. It isn’t happening.
Taller Half loves cold weather while I prefer warmer, verging on hot. It can make living in the same house a challenge. The thermostat has almost become a weapon. He likes it low, and I like it high, so it’s a constant battle. So far Taller Half is winning. The lower power bill has given him the edge.
My allies are our dogs. Though they have been given sweaters, which they refuse to wear, the cold air is hard on them. They must go outside several times a day to take care of business, and they pay a price in misery. Good thing they can’t reach the thermostat. They can, however, get up on the couch, where they sprawl out, leaving little room for us humans.
Though they aren’t economical, fireplaces are a favorite of houses and their owners. Their bright, dancing flames give a room a warm, cozy feel. I miss the fireplaces we once enjoyed in former houses. Is there a chance one can be added here? Taller Half is thinking about it. Cold fingers crossed!
