Here's hoping for the roar of spring

Every season has specific chores, and winter’s outside chore needs can be dangerous. We have been told that if you are over 65 years old, do not shovel snow. My Taller Half was delighted to hear that. Snow shoveling is cold, exhausting work and needs doing pretty much after every snowfall. It is most effective when the snow is powdery because ice doesn't throw well.
Our snow blower was a bit much for us to handle, so it went to live at a daughter’s house. We bought a new snow shovel this year and discovered it wasn’t great at shoveling the ice hiding under the snow. Actually, the exposed icy patches are super slippery. So Taller Half had to shovel a layer of snow back on to those slippery patches for traction.
We finally figured it out and learned kitty litter gave better traction than snow. Sadly, our dogs prefer to use the litter-covered walk as their potty place — not their best idea. Taller Half now has to shovel both snow and the other stuff off our walks.
At this writing there are only 30 days left of winter, according to the television weather folks. But this is Ohio, and we all know winter has never left us before the end of March. We have even been informed that snowfall has actually occurred in May. Though global warming is not a good thing, if it brings us an early spring, it can’t be all bad.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed that spring arrives like a lion later this month and chases winter away until next December.
