Snowy weather headaches and miracle of 2022

I can just sit and watch my husband, Joe, work for hours. This tells you how helpful I am. He is not one to fly by the seat of his pants. He is meticulous when it comes to figuring out a problem; like the other night when he tore apart and serviced a heater at our house that was making a noise.

I did not do the best job of helping him label the wires and when three out of five of my removable labels, which seemed to be hanging tight at first, removed themselves from the wires before he was done, he still figured it out.

So, I was surprised when he called me to “bring the truck.” Remember, you did not hear this from me.

Joe was out running errands in my car, and he stopped to check on some buildings that aren’t used in the winter to make sure there were no problems. That is when it happened, the snow didn’t look that deep but when my car broke through that frosty snow covered 3-inch ice crust with more snow underneath as well, it was too much for my all-wheel drive. That car was stuck.

I took my time getting to our detached garage. There was a chill in the air and the icy threat of broken bones beneath my feet. I carefully backed the truck, which I seldom drive, out of the garage and, cutting the steering wheel too much to the right or was that the left, right into a snow pile. Thankfully, the tires spun only briefly before I was off to the rescue.

It was shocking to see my car stuck on a slight uphill grade; it was buried hub cap deep. Joe set about hooking up a rope to pull the car out.

Being the extremely helpful person I am, I quickly pulled out my phone and took some photos of the situation. I even moved around to get several different angles of the shot.

“You are not putting those on Facebook,” Joe said.

Darn, he ruins all my fun. He didn’t say I couldn’t text them to my sister though – loophole.

Now for the hard part, Joe wants me to sit in the car and guide it out as he pulls with the truck from behind. I put the car in neutral, but then it is all too much.

The truck starts pulling and it feels like my car is going sideways. Augh. I’m out of control. I hate that. Usually when I am backing, I am looking at the backup camera screen in the car except for now. I look at that screen which, of course, is dark because the car is in neutral. They need to fix that.

I haven’t had a vehicle with a backup camera for more than a few years, but now, it seems, I am dependent upon it.

Out of the window, I can see a signpost that I really don’t want to hit, so I start turning the wheel. It’s getting stressful. My heart is beating faster as backing a car has never been my forte but that’s another column.

Joe is not happy. It seems I’m on track to hit another target I didn’t see on the other side of the car. Augh! I do my best and he finally determines that the car is now out of the deep snow enough that he can just back it out of that snow trap.

Thank goodness, I am off the hook. All is well, except for the weather.

We are sick of this snow and ice, although thanks to the power of prayer and Asplundh who spent a lot of time in our neighborhood last summer cutting and trimming trees, our power did not go out during the last big storm. It was nothing short of the Miracle of 2022.

I certainly hope there will not be more to write about this winter. And I am also hoping some of the forecast 50-degree days will get us out of this icy mess but in the meantime, stay safe out there. Spring is coming and the sooner the better.
