Waiting for the Christmas season to start in October

Waiting for the Christmas season to start in October

A few days before you are reading this, I got ready for my day by putting on a pair of shorts and a T-shirt. Guess what? There’s a new — or new to me — weather term called False Fall. The day was cloudy and cool with a high of only 69 F. It depends on the humidity how warm 69 F is, and this was not a warm 69 F. Still, I wasn’t changing to warmer clothes because it’s still summer.

I’m not ready to give up on summer, and I don’t have to because it looks like 90 F is still on the horizon in the near future. I don’t want to give up on fall either, even though I still have my tabletop Christmas tree up and lit nightly from 5 p.m. to midnight. There’s a good reason for that.

Last December I was really sick with something. After a couple days, I could hardly move out of bed. It was bad, and the only thing I knew for sure was it wasn’t COVID because I did the home test. I missed a lot of fun activities, and that crazy illness lasted for more than a month. I even had to get an X-ray in January to make sure I didn’t have pneumonia.

Anyway, I did not have the energy to get out any of my Christmas decorations prior to the holiday. So finally on Christmas Eve, I dragged myself to the attic, reached in and pulled out my tabletop tree — the one Joe and I have had every year since we first celebrated Christmas together. It holds a lot of meaning. I plugged it into the light timer, and we were all set.

The holidays came and went, and I was still tired out. The end of February came, and that is when I usually take down my Christmas decorations. I like to leave them up throughout the winter because it’s winter. We need something to brighten up the dark days.

But that illness still left me with a bad feeling. I love Christmas. And how many Christmases do I have left? No one knows for sure. Since it was only the tree and not my boxes and boxes of decorations, I decided to leave it up for the year. It’s good to have goals.

It worked out great when the Christmas in July holiday movies rolled around. I could enjoy the colorful, twinkling lights in our home while watching Christmas movies on television in the warm, toasty weather. You can watch sappy Christmas movies year round on some channels, at least once a week. We have some of our favorites on DVD.

And it’s going to work out great when the new Christmas movie season starts again in October, usually well before Halloween. I’ll already have the tree up.

They haven’t released the exact movie schedule yet. I know this because I asked Joe if he had downloaded the movie check list. This has become our thing. We watch these heartwarming movies, and we check them off the list so we don’t miss any.

No list yet, but they’ve released information about the new titles.

I don’t know where they come up with these “new” ideas. I’m kidding, of course, because it isn’t very well disguised. The first movie I saw was titled “Holiday Touchdown: A Chief’s Love Story.” It stars a cute blonde woman and a handsome guy with a beard, although he is not a football player — he only works for the team. And they have on Kansas City Chief’s football jerseys. Where could this idea have come from?

We are going to watch it though. I don’t care if it’s not very original or surprising; it’s a feel-good movie, and it’s a little predictable.

Predictable is good. Life isn’t predictable, and it isn’t always heartwarming, so bring on the Christmas movie season. My tree is ready and so is my heart.
