The McGuffey series was universally used in Ohio from 1836 when first introduced by William Holmes McGuffey. This series was the torch of education in Ohio into the early 1900s. His books not only taught the three Rs, but also the basics of thrift, honesty, and charity. He taught millions to read, spell, and study. Today his books are very collectible and I have seen them priced up to $45 for originals in good condition. They have been reprinted, so look at the copyright date.
