The fire department was called to the barn at the rear of the Yinkey home on High street at noon on Wednesday, a grass fire having made its way to the structure. H.L. Allen headed a party of fire fighters, and when the department arrived at the scene the flames had been extinguished.
Mayor Feeman was at the fire department when the call came in, and afterwards stated that the new men placed there recently, acted like veterans. Jos. Kesler drove the wagon to the scene of the fire, it being his first trip. The run was made in good time and the department was right on the job ready to fight the fire.
BABERTON MAN KILLS HIS WIFE
Angered because his wife and mother-in-law Mrs. Phoebe Minnich, would not support him, Harry G. Fravel of Barberton shot and killed his wife, Minnie, 25, yesterday afternoon, fired two shots at Mrs. Minnich and then turned his weapon on himself, inflicting wounds that are expected to result in his death before evening. Fravel was a man about town. His wife had grown tired of his failure to support her and himself. He was solicitor for an insurance company a short time and did a little work at the Diamond Match Co., but spent most of his time in a leisurely way, resulting in the separation of the couple a month ago.
MAY VOTE ON BALL QUESTION
Wooster baseball fans were interested in the passage of the Sunday baseball law for two reasons. It is very likely that petitions will be circulated to bring the matter to a vote in Wooster at the upcoming primaries. The other reason is that up at Cleveland they are almost certain of voting in favor of baseball, and that means that many Wooster people can go to Cleveland to see American League games on Sundays.
COMMITTEE TO COLLECT MONEY
The Industrial League directors held a meeting Wednesday evening and appointed a finance committee of H.H. Barrett, Wm. Laper and James Brauneck to solicit funds in the city for the erection of bleachers at the B & O grounds in first class shape. This committee will see the merchants in the near future.
At the meeting Wednesday evening the following teams filed application for membership in the league: Plumbers, Brus Works, Brick Works, and Expiramental Station. All of these applications were accepted. The directors learned Wednesday evening that the Pad Works and the Gerstenslager team would apply for membership, the Gerstenslagers just learning that it will be possible for them to play. Another meeting of the directors will be held next Wednesday night.
PLAY OPENER HERE FRIDAY
The high school will open baseball season Friday afternoon when the Millersburg team will be here. As the visitors cannot get to Wooster until 2:45, the game has been slated to start at 3:30, but this will give ample time to complete it before dark.
The high school players put the finishing touches to their practice Thursday evening when the members of the Manhattan Stock Co. were up at the high school for a contest on the diamond. The team is in good condition and will work hard to win. High scholars sold many season tickets Thursday.
SOCIALLY SPEAKING
While preparing the evening meal at her home on South Buckeye street Tuesday night, Mrs. Will Hughes was greatly surprised when a few of her friends marched into the house and announced that they were going to stay for supper. Tuesday was Mrs. Hughes birthday and her husband planned the surprise. The guests took baskets and a delightful feast was served. The evening was spent in music and other pleasing diversions.
