Don't let your talents go to waste

"Your talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to God.” — Leo Buscaglia.

You want to know where the biggest amount of buried treasure is? No, it's not out in the desert, on the side of a mountain, in the jungle or even in the depth of the ocean. I bet some of you even think I am going to say it is in the human heart. Guess again.

The biggest pocket of buried treasure can be found in every cemetery around the world. There are books that have never been written, songs that have never been sung, sermons that have never been preached and other gifts that have never been given back to God or shared with the rest of the world.

Let me share something with you that will totally shock and dumbfound some of you. God wants to use you, yes you. He wants to use you, me and everyone with breath. God has a special assignment for every living person on this Earth. It is up to us whether or not we are going to accept it.

How do I know God has given everybody a gift to use in this world? It's very easy to figure it out. Are we dead? If the answer is no, God can and will use us if we let him. I for one don't believe God would make anyone to just take up space. Now I know a lot of people who are great at taking up space, but that's not what they were made to do.

In Matthew 25:14-29, we read of a rich man who entrusted his servants with talents, or as the NIV puts it, bags of gold. One received five, another received two and a third one received one. The rich man went off on a long journey, and when he came back, he demanded an account for what the servants did with his money.

The one that was given five turned them into 10, and the one with two doubled it to four. The rich man told them “well done” and put them over more of his possessions. However, the one that had one put it in a hole in the ground. He was afraid of the rich man, so he kept it safe until the man came back.

The rich man called the last servant lazy and told him he could have put it in the bank for him at the very least so that he could have drawn some interest on it. If that rebuke wasn't enough, the rich man took away the one talent and gave it to the one with ten.

Let me ask you this: Is God getting a return on his investment in your life? You see God has given each one of us talent. How are we using it for his glory?

Some of us might be able to talk in front of a large crowd and never think twice about it. Others may have a great amount of people skills and are not using them. It's time. Some may have the ability to teach. Why don't you teach Sunday School?

My talent is to write, but the problem I keep having is I can only spell at an elementary level and my grammar leaves a lot to be desired, but I have a way of putting my ideas down on paper and telling stories. I also have a talent for encouraging people. I tried for years to run away from writing, even though I could feel God was calling me to write.

It wasn't until I began getting an A on almost every one of my papers in college that the light bulb went on for me. Even when I began writing as a job, I realized how poor my grammar was. I thought I was way over my head, and there were many times I just thought I would call it and quit. Something kept telling me to keep on writing.

We all need to find out what our talents are and use them for the glory of God. If you have no idea what your talent is, all you need to do is ask God, and he will let you know.

If God gave it to you, he meant for you to use it. He does not give talent out to go unused. He will lead and guide you in how to use your talents for his glory if you ask him to show you.
