Finding out what’s inside the box

Finding out what’s inside the box

We have come to realize that we had boxes filled with “stuff” and we had no idea just what that “stuff” was. It was way past time to sort through those boxes and discover just what had been living in them for way too long. It’s a job we didn’t look forward to doing but one that had to be done.

The first box we pulled out of a closet was filled with a huge assortment of albums filled with pictures, plus several portraits of long past family members in rather fancy but unattractive frames.

Once that box was emptied, we pulled out another box, this one filled with blankets and several bedspreads, a quilt, and several throws. That was a total, albeit pleasant, surprise because we had forgotten we even had them. It also was a timely discovery as cold weather is approaching and we have concerns we might need a few more of each as the nights get colder. That box held a welcome find.

The contents of the next box were a bit different, a whole bunch of old clothes that were supposed to have been delivered to Goodwill but instead were encased in our closet. That was the easiest box to deal with because it went right out of the house and straight to Goodwill that very day.

We were not so lucky with the next box. It was crammed full of family pictures dating back at least 100 years. That was a box full of work! We had to examine each photo,
hoping to find at least a name and a date on it so we could figure out to which side of the family the person belonged. We should be so lucky. We were able to identify the person or place in several of the photos, and the rest were put back and sent to another family member in hopes they could identify the folks in them. We haven’t heard anything from them, so that box is very likely living in one of their closets.

There are several more boxes for us to look through, but we have run out of steam. One of these days we might finish the job, but that day has yet to be determined.

My idea is to leave each of our children one of those boxes. Hope they have fun sorting through the contents. They might even find something of interest. I hope so.
