Wicked winds always worry me

Wicked winds always worry me

This past week we had some really wild and powerful winds. All sorts of tree twigs and leaf-covered branches got deposited on our grass along with a loose fitting hat off of Taller Half’s head, although he did manage to catch the thing before it sailed off into the next county.

We even watched a poor squirrel literally sail out of his tree and hit the road running. He made it safely across and ran to the closest tree and wrapped his paws around the trunk, clinging to it with all his might.

Some folks lost power when Mother Nature threw her latest wind tantrum. Some friends had to put up with an erratically banging vent cover on their roof. Actually, that seemed to upset their dog and cats more than it did them.

High winds really upset our houses, who are rather vulnerable to such storms. Houses have no choice but to stand there and take whatever happens, Personally, I find it difficult to go to sleep when Mother Nature is having a wind-fit. What if a tree falls on our place? So far, over our many years of surviving windstorms, every one of our houses has hung onto her roof and not one roof of any of our former houses has been smashed by a tree. Have we been just very lucky? Will our good luck run out? Sorry Taller Half, I can’t help it.

Years ago, we were in a hurricane’s path. It was a monster storm that did all sorts of damage where we were living back then. Our house was shaken up a bit, but no real structural damage, except, we lost power for about a week. The storm left us with rising temperatures. With no power, there was no air conditioning and no fans, which made for very uncomfortable living, especially when trying to sleep. We drank our drinks not cold and took our showers not warm. Trees had been knocked down across some roads so even going to get groceries was an adventure.

Those memories still haunt me, so when Mother Nature turns loose her wild winds, I get nervous. Though he won’t admit it, so does Taller Half.
