The directors of the Wayne County Senior Fair Board and members of the Wayne County Junior Fair Board came together on Dec. 4 for their annual Bike Night, an annual tradition in Wayne County since 2005. On this night senior fair board directors and 4-H members assemble bikes that will be donated to local organizations. Since the start of this tradition, over 500 bikes have been donated to local children for Christmas.
The cost of the bikes was covered by donations from local 4-H clubs, senior fair board members and Shreve Hardware. The total cost for the bikes, plus helmets, added up to $3,258. In the end 30 bicycles were purchased, assembled and distributed this year.
Local charities will receive these bikes to distribute during their children’s Christmas toy drives this year. The bikes were delivered by fair board members to the People to People Ministries, Salvation Army and Wayne County Children’s Services. Salvation Army received eight bikes, and People to People and Wayne County Children’s Services received 11 each. These kids will not only get a brand-new bike, but they also are receiving a new helmet.
We value building and keeping relationships with our senior fair board members, our junior fair board members and the community. We want our 4-H members to be around good role models who are willing to put in their time and money to make a difference in the life of a child in need. We are so thankful for these opportunities to give back to our community, which does so much in return for the Wayne County 4-H program.
If you know anyone interested in joining 4-H in 2024, we would love to have you at our Come Explore the World of 4-H Night on March 4 at Fisher Auditorium at 7 p.m. You will get help on how to find and join a 4-H club, learn about all the cool projects your child could take, and meet the extension staff and junior fair board members. Hope to see you there.
