14 College for Kids classes to be offered
The College for Kids program at Kent State Tuscarawas will kick off June 18 and run through June 22 with new classes designed to enrich young students. New classes will include Web Design, Rocking out with Science and Buckeye Ninja Warrior for students grade 1-6.
Additionally a new class teaching young teens how to practice important safety skills, how to handle emergencies and how to treat illnesses and injuries will be offered through Safe Sitter for students grade 6-8.
Founded in 1980, Safe Sitter is a national nonprofit organization devoted to preparing young teens with the life and safety skills they need when they are home alone, watching younger siblings or babysitting.
This class also teaches American Heart Association CPR and how to help an infant or child who is choking. Students will learn how to entertain children of different ages so all the little ones are occupied. Students also will learn important business skills, like how to screen jobs, set a wage and work with employers. Each student will receive their own Safe Sitter kit and certification.
A total of 14 College for Kids classes will be offered during this 28th year of programming.
“We have added some great new programs such as Megan Brannon from Garaway schools teaching Web Design with the new Google sites and Rocking out with Science with Steven Miller from Eurydice Studios in Canton,” said Cindi Supers, coordinator of College for Kids. “Buckeye Ninja Warrior is another new class that is based on a popular television show and will be tons of fun for both age groups. Brian Crim from Performance Academies in Columbus is bringing all of his obstacles and putting students to the test.”
Nicole Miles from Claymont schools and Kent State Tuscarawas will teach Movie Maker, where students will learn to make and edit their own digital movies and cartoons and take them home on a flash drive.
In the Emergency Room class, students will learn how to work as a medical team and save lives with Donna Morgan from Kent State Tuscarawas.
Students will Get Wild with Nature with Marsha Freeland from Tuscarawas Soil & Water Conservation. This class will be held at the Historic Schoenbrunn Village. Students will learn about the different creatures that live in and around the water, meadows and woods.
College for Kids also includes courses for the budding artists with Splatter & Drip, for students who love to be in the kitchen with Jr. Chefs and for those with a musical ear who want to experience the steel drum with Jumbie Jammin’.
Students’ imagination will take over in Makerspace Magic, and they can experience life from the 18th century in the Life in 1772 Historic Schoenbrunn Village course. Students also will learn about Mexican culture, customs and traditions in the Hola Amigitos! class.
Class fees range from $85-$125. Registrations will be accepted through June 11. Limited financial assistance is available for the College for Kids classes.
Again this year, college-level scholarships will be given to all participants for future use toward credit programming. Each registrant will receive a $100 scholarship to Kent State Tuscarawas with a limit of $500 over five years. Use of the limited scholarships must be in degree status. The scholarships are not transferable.
