Board recognizes achievements of Fairless students

The Mathletes team consists of first and second grade elementary students and middle school students.

                        

Fairless Superintendent Michael Hearn was given a five-year contract extension during the March 19 board meeting. Hearn’s contract is in effect through 2025. Hearn was hired as deputy superintendent in 2022 and worked a year under former Superintendent Broc Bidlack. He took the reigns in August 2023. At the time the board gave Hearn a three-year contract. He is a 1999 Fairless High graduate and returned to the district in 2003 as a tutor and previously served as curriculum director.

The board also recognized the Mathletes team, state wrestling qualifiers and more. The Mathletes team consists of first and second grade elementary students and middle school students. Forty-five students participated, and 25 students placed in the event.

The board also did the following:

—Accepted the resignation of Shawn Frazier, head girls soccer, at the completion of the 2023-24 school year; Kathryn Hess, paraprofessional aide, effective March 29; Connor McKenney, fourth-grade English/language arts teacher, effective May 31; and Nicole Mercer, EMIS coordinator, effective June 30.

—Issued a one-year probationary confidential contract to Nicole Mercer as director of data, effective July 1.

—Approved Kristine Twigg, color guard adviser, for the 2024-25 school year.

—Approved a two-year probationary confidential contract to Kari Wentling, special programs secretary, effective Aug. 1.

—Entered into an agreement with Legacy Project of Stark County to provide mentoring services at the middle school at a cost of $6,500.

—Approved one-year probationary classified contracts to William Moore, head mechanic, effective, March 4, and Dana Nash, elementary secretary, effective Aug. 1.

—Hired Christine Everhart, ES summer school director, at a rate of $3,500. It is for gifted students’ intervention in reading and math.

The next board meeting will be held April 16 at 6:15 p.m. at Fairless High, 800 Seventh St., Brewster.
