Buckeye Career Center has named the January Student of the Month recipients. Two high school students were chosen for the honor after being nominated by their instructors for demonstrating critical thinking, this month’s core value. An adult education student also was named for the honor.

January’s Female Student of the Month is culinary arts/chef training student, Alexis Duffley. Duffley, senior from Garaway, was nominated by her instructor Mike Starlin.

“Alexis is a problem-solver. For a luncheon the class recently served for Christmas, Alexis informed the students of what the dinner plate consisted of. She counted the guests and washed and counted all the service ware that was needed without being given any other information,” Starlin said.

Duffley works for Jackie’s Cleaning Service and participated in two years of band. She enjoys photography and hopes to obtain a career that allows her to work with animals. She also aspires to do photography as a side job following graduation. She is the daughter of Corey and Amanda Duffley.

January’s Male Student of the Month is Neil Shedron, a construction technology senior from Tusky Valley. Shedron was nominated by his instructor Terry Thompson.

“Neil continues to be a major leader throughout the construction technology program. In the finishing of the recent house, Neil was always the one to take on the harder tasks. He is knowledgeable and dependable,” Thompson said.

Shedron’s hobbies include working on and riding four-wheelers. He is a member of SkillsUSA and hopes to enter the construction field or enter the U.S. Air Force upon graduation in May.

This month’s Adult Education Student of the Month is Austin Evans of New Philadelphia. Evans is enrolled in the utility lineworker program.

“I wanted to be able to get a good-paying job to provide a future for my family,” Evans said when asked about why he enrolled in the program.

Evans plans to get a job with a power company and travel after graduation. He attends NewPointe Community Church, is a server at Texas Roadhouse and is married to Sarah Evans.

Duffley, Shedron and Evans were honored at the January Buckeye Career Center’s board of education meeting and received photo banners to commemorate the honor. The high school winners and nominees also will receive a free lunch from principal Matt Fockler.
