Thirty-two culinary arts students competed in the annual cake decorating contest at the Wayne County Schools Career Center Feb. 3. The students had two and a half hours to frost and decorate their cakes in one of three categories: traditional, whimsical or theme. First place winners received gold medals; second, silver; and third and fourth, bronze. Winning best of show with her Oreo cake, complete with filling and featuring a giant bite out of it, was Ashley Pado of Triway. Second place in best of show went to Mercedes Kavalchek of Chippewa, with a green “Mad Hatter” hat cake. Lindsey Evans of Smithville won third place in best of show for her cake of a pond, reeds, flowers and ducks. Winners in traditional cakes were: first place, Tori Ungerer of Wooster with a white lacy wedding cake; and second, Leslie Rhodes of Rittman with a multicolored square cake. In the whimsical category, winning first place was Kavalchek; second, Pado; and third, Kristen Kollert, home-schooled, with a tuxedo cake. In the theme category, first place went to Evans, second, Tiffany Hummel of Waynedale with her Valentine heart cake; third, Kelsey Yontz of Rittman with her tie-dyed peace cake; and fourth, Andrew Woodland of Smithville with a golf course cake. Judges were Wayne County Schools Career Center culinary arts alumni Brian Bercaw, executive chef with AVI in Warren, and Heather Sulzbach, chef at Ken Stewart’s Trebella in Bath; and Barb Houmard, career center student activities liaison. The event was coordinated by culinary arts instructors Bob Bercaw and Andrew Arko.
