Career center FFA students place high at state skill competitions

Wayne County Schools Career Center FFA students placed high recently in state skill competitions. On April 22, the FFA Northeastern Ohio Skills Classic team won fifth place overall at Maplewood Joint Vocational School in Ravenna. At OSU/ATI, the landscape and plant technologies floral team placed fourth in the state out of 20 teams.
At the state skills classic, buildings and grounds student Ben Simms of Waynedale placed first in hand lawn mowing. He is the son of Mark and Melinda Simms of Apple Creek.
Landscape and plant technologies students Colton Smith of Norwayne and Seth Snyder of Wooster placed first in tree transplanting. Smith is the son of Patty Smith of Burbank, and Snyder is the son of Scott and Sherill Snyder of Wooster.
Wayne Countys fourth place floriculture team included Robin Bryant of Triway, Amy Miller of Dalton, Meghan Perry of Smithville, and Justin Starn of Orrville. They competed against 180 other participants.

Natural resources: Michael Doney of Chippewa, third, and Nikki Wilson of Chippewa, 11th; corsage making: Laura Gearhart of Orrville, and Smith, tied for third; paint and ladder safety: Jordan Palmer of Orrville and Erik Wright of Rittman, tied for fourth; assembly: Kramer Buss of Smithville and Joe Walmer of Waynedale, tied for fifth; flower and vegetable identification: Gearhart, fifth, and Brad Klucar of Smithville, eighth; commercial walk-behind mower: Doug Myers of Norwayne, third, and Andy Sillman of Wooster, eighth; safe tractor operator: Myers, sixth; mowing: George Rockar III of Orrville, ninth.
Landscape and plant technologies instructor is Gregg Gillespie, and buildings and grounds instructor is Brett Gough.
