The Wayne County Schools Career Center high school Practical Nursing program honored students at the annual completion ceremony at West Hill Baptist Church on May 24. Keri Shrewsbury of Dalton was awarded the Tillie Lorincz Scholarship and was named valedictorian of the class. She is the daughter of Cynthia Shrewsbury of Dalton. Presenting the award was Ferenc Relle of the Greater Wayne County Foundation. Salutatorian was Jill Marty of Heritage Private School. She is the daughter of Ralph and Marie Marty of Smithville. Class president Alexandra Leister of Smithville addressed her peers. “We came here as strangers, we leave as friends,” she said. “I wish you good luck in whichever road you choose. Remember always, treat your patients as if they are the only one who matters.” She quoted George Washington Carver, “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and strong, because someday in your life, you will have been all of these.” Shrewsbury talked to her peers about their hardships and triumphs. “From the first day of our junior year, we have matured tremendously, and have been through many unique experiences that will prepare us for the challenges we will be faced with as new nurses.” She thanked the teachers for inspiring each one to perform to the best of their abilities and giving them encouragement. “We must always remind ourselves to be positive, always to believe in yourself, and know that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Your attitude toward any situation will determine the outcome,” Shrewsbury said. Marty said she had never realized the time and effort nurses put forth and the many duties and responsibilities they hold. “To be a nurse, you have to care about people and it takes a special person,” she said. “It takes willpower and diligence to sit down and study for hours… one day at a time is the only way to get through nursing school.” Mentor awards were given to Dawn Finnegan, STNA from Glendora Health Care Center, Wooster; Toby Snow, RN, and Shelly Graham-Norris, LPN, both of Ida Sue School; and Glendora Health Care Center. Graduates presented flowers to family members and friends who supported them throughout the two-year program. Presenting the class for completion was practical nursing instructor Pamela Vorkapich on behalf of practical nursing coordinator Jackie Shrock, and accepting the class was Dr. Kip Crain, superintendent. Ashley Boggs of Norwayne gave the invocation, and Erica Faber of Chippewa the benediction. Other class officers this year were Chandra Corral of Orrville, secretary; Taryn Hanzie of Norwayne, treasurer; and Abigail Steiner of Smithville, historian. Pins were presented to each graduate by instructors Beth Gagnon, Pamela Vorkapich, and Katherine O’Brien. The class included: Boggs, Lindsey Buckingham of Norwayne, Corral, Faber, Heidi Farriss of Dalton, Hanzie, Hillary Holmes of Chippewa, Leister, Marty, Brittney Shoup of Chippewa, Shrewsbury, and Tabitha White of Northwestern. Clinical sites this year were Apostolic Christian Home, Smithville Western Care Center, Brenn-Field Nursing Care Center, Glendora Health Care Center, Wooster Community Hospital, Scenic Pointe, Orrville Pointe, Pleasant View Health Care, Doylestown Health Care, Westview Manor Care Center, Dunlap Community Hospital, Ida Sue/Nick Amster School, and Summa Health Care Systems of Barberton.
