Aaron Ryan admitted he was shocked when he passed all five parts of the Ohio Graduation Test on the first attempt this spring but that shock quickly went away when he collected $100 for his success. Ryan is a Mapleton schools sophomore in the Transportation Academy (TA) program at Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center, a program set up specifically for sophomore students who are at-risk. For several years, the program’s teacher, Gary Strine, has tried to add extra motivation for his students by offering $100 to any TA student who passed all parts of the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT). Since the promise was made several years ago, no student has claimed the money, but this year Ryan was quick to cash in on his teacher’s promise. Strine said he has had other students who passed three or four parts of the test but never a student who passed all five parts - especially on the first try. He noted that this is quite an accomplishment for any student in his program though Ryan said he really didn’t think the test was so difficult.
