Twenty-six Wayne County Schools Career Center students were inducted into the Marie Chenevey Chapter of the National Honor Society during a recent candlelight ceremony. They join 22 seniors who were inducted last year. Zach Studer of Smithville led the Pledge of Allegiance, then Principal Matt Brown welcomed the parents, friends, staff and guests. “Since 1921, the National Honor Society has honored outstanding high school achievements,” he said. “This is a lot more than just making the honor roll.” He said this year’s honorees are our nation’s future leaders. “Keep these qualities at the core of your personal and professional lives,” he said. Adviser Michelle Bower said the honorees represent the best of the best. “They will leave a legacy behind them,” she said. “They have earned this award by the effective demonstration of the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service and character.” The candle at the center of the ceremony represented the eternal light of knowledge, and each candle around it signified the other four qualities the members and inductees possess, Bower said. Senior leadership members Madison Frye of Wooster spoke about scholarship, Martha Jenkins of Norwayne, service; Kyle Snell of Smithville, leadership, and Katelynn Milliken of Dalton, character. Selecting the students for membership were faculty council members Jim Harlan, Amber Long, Helena Ritchey, Bruce Steiner and Amy Tietz. Long, Ritchey and Tietz presented certificates, membership cards, senior cords and flowers to the honored students. Director of operations Lynn Moomaw led the new members in the National Honor Society pledge. “Make your pledge with the same commitment and sincerity with which you earned this honor,” she said. Senior members honored teachers who have made a difference in their lives. They were: Wendy St. Clair of Rittman High School, Melissa Schneider of Shreve Elementary School; Nancy Rose, a homeschooling instructor; Shelly Peterson, a retired teacher from Edgewood Middle School; and Anita Hawkins, Sarah Edington, Kimberly Huffman, Pamela Vorkapich, Keri Merickel, Scott Brown, Rodney Martell, Beth Gagnon and Lesa Krites, all of the Wayne County Schools Career Center.
