Career center students power past competition in FFA contest

Two Wayne County Schools Career Center ag mechanics/power technologies students, Andrew Forrer of Dalton and Keith McConahay of Northwestern, placed first with a score of 200 at the FFA District 3 Agricultural and Industrial Diagnostics contest held at the career center Feb. 18. The Wayne County team will compete at the state contest at the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima on March 11 and 12.
Other participating teams were from Ashtabula County JVS in Jefferson, which placed second with a score of 144, Buckeye Local Schools in Medina, which placed third with a score of 137, and Mahoning County Career & Technical Center in Canfield, which placed fourth with a score of 136.
The students were given 20 minutes to troubleshoot at five stations on the following tractors and power equipment: a Caterpillar Skidloader 262C, New Holland T6050, Case 115, John Deere 6430, and AGCO DT275B tractors. They also took a written test on agricultural mechanics.
The contest was coordinated by FFA Ag Mechanics Alumni President Jon Wellert of Wellert AC Parts. Judges were: Jon Bauman of Lowe & Young Inc., Jeran Stoller of Sterling Farm Equipment, Sam Gerber of Maibachs Tractor, Zac Casey of Shearer Equipment, and Dan Steiner of Woodlyn Acres Farm LLC, Dalton. Wellert, Bauman, Stoller, Casey and Steiner are all Wayne County Schools Career Center ag mechanics alumni.
Ag mechanics/power technologies instructors and FFA advisers are Craig Wellert and Wayne Bartter.
