Two Wayne County Schools Career Center seniors were recognized recently for having the highest test scores on the American Legion Americanism Test from both Wooster High School and the career center. The awards were presented in front of their peers from their career and technical programs. This is the 10th year that the career center has participated in the testing program, said government teacher Kimberly Huffman. Jasmine Gillentine, of Wooster, a senior in Animal Care and Management, and Tim Hartman, of Rittman, a senior in Engineering Technologies, were presented with certificates and checks for $25 each from American Legion Post 68. Gillentine is the daughter of Jennifer Todd of Wooster, and Hartman is the son of Daniel and Susan Hartman of Rittman. Students in some government classes at the career center take the test as part of their curriculum, said government instructor Theresa Morgan. The test, given in late October, included 50 questions on government and an essay completing this sentence: Mr. President, as a student my concerns are .... It was a mix of everything, said Gillentine, local, school, state and national government. She said she was surprised that she had the highest score for girls. The test is given at schools throughout Wayne County, and a boy and girl in each grade level from sophomores to seniors with the highest scores advance to the District, regionals and then go to the State level. State winners win a trip to Washington D.C.
