Claymont Foundation doles out educational grants for new programs
                        
The Claymont Foundation has awarded more than $20,000 in educational grants for the 2011-2012 school year. The board of trustees is pleased to announce the following projects and programs: Smart Board for Eastport Elementary - A Smart Board in the art room at Eastport Elementary will assist in the development of the K-4 elementary art program through interactive technology (submitted by Brittany Hall). Art Club for Claymont Intermediate and Junior High art students – This club will foster interest in the arts and provide Claymont Intermediate and Junior High students with an after-school art program. The program is designed to supplement the art experience of all students, while offering additional enrichment for students gifted in the arts (submitted by Rachel Hartwig). So You Think You Can Dance - Intermediate students will discover music from around the world and learn the dances to music from different cultures (submitted by Sarah Robinson). Ceramics Supplies for Claymont Intermediate and Junior High students – These supplies will provide the opportunity for Claymont Intermediate and Junior High students to create their own 3-D artwork using clay (submitted by Rachel Hartwig). Got Rhythm? - Students are currently learning to play and sing songs from different cultures. These instruments will allow the students to visualize and play instruments as if they were playing and singing in that country (submitted by Sarah Robinson). Peter and the Wolf - Bringing this production of Peter and the Wolf to Trenton and Eastport allows the students to experience storytelling through music and dance and enables them to learn the different instruments of the orchestra (submitted by Jeanne Carrothers). Pottery Wheel - This pottery wheel will replace the final older wheel in the high school arts classroom. The wheels are now being used for classes after school and in the evenings for school personnel and others in the community (submitted by Carrie Kunkle). Merry Melody Makers - These musical instruments for the preschoolers will encourage the preschoolers to open this communication and expressive avenues (submitted by Avalene Neininger). Wireless Microphone Packs - The additional wireless microphones will provide more students with the opportunity to be heard during musicals, plays and choral performances (submitted by Lora Cotton). Sousaphone - The sousaphones owned by the school are in desperate need of replacement. One sousaphone will be replaced at this time (submitted by Jim Howell). Night at the Museum - Students will create a glow-in-the-dark classroom museum (submitted by Nicole Miles). To Kill a Mockingbird - The eighth graders will study To Kill a Mockingbird with a focus on Kohlberg’s Six Levels of Moral Development and will attend the performance by the Magical Theatre Company in Barberton (submitted by Elizabeth Drabik.) Engaged: Building Lifelong Readers with High Interest Literature - Students will read and study these young adult novels in order to assist in their OGT reading essays (submitted by Rochelle Seibert.) The Mustang Exchange - The Mustang Exchange is a service project started by the National Honor Society at the Junior High as a volunteer service project to provide gently used clothing, shoes and accessories to the student body at Claymont. This grant request will provide additional storage and display units and supplies (submitted by Pam Natoli). Science Around Us - This project allows students to learn about science as it relates to the world around them. The program emphasizes experimentation and discovery, methods of data collection, analysis and presentation (submitted by Sue Clark and Derek O’Hara). Ohio Case Histories - Fourth-grade students will have the opportunity make Ohio history come alive through cases of The First Ohioans and Pioneer Life with audiovisual materials and hands-on objects and artifacts (submitted by Rebecca Stewart). Budget Challenge: Personal Finance Simulation - This program teaches students the importance of personal financial planning through budget planning, checking account usage, bill paying, savings, good spending habits and preparing for retirement (submitted by Eric Henry). Young Author Project - This project allows second grade intervention students to go through all of the steps to create a classroom book to be published and shared with their families and other classrooms (submitted by Angela Marsh). The Claymont Foundation is a not-for-profit organization established to enhance and encourage the educational excellence of the Claymont City Schools.
