The Wayne County Historical Society recently announced Savannah Wenger of Dalton High School is the recipient of a $2,000 award toward continuing her education and softball career at Waynesburg University in Pennsylvania.

Dick Stull is the founder and sponsor of this award, formerly connected with the Wayne County All-Stars tournament, in conjunction with the Wayne County Historical Society.

The award is based on Wenger's accomplishments on the softball field and in the classroom. The daughter of Doug and Deb Wenger of Dalton, Wenger's 4.0 GPA ranked her No. 1 and valedictorian of her class of 68, and she also was a four-year Academic Award winner for both volleyball and softball.

On the softball field, Wenger earned two letters as a second baseman, batting .295 as a senior with two home runs. In 2023 she was an All-Wayne County Athletic League honorable mention selection.

A member of the National Honor Society, she also was involved in numerous activities outside the classroom including Choral Club and Drama Club.

“Savannah represents the type of student that every administrator, teacher and shareholder wishes to see walk through the halls,” said Zach McFarren, assistant principal and athletic director at Dalton High. “Savannah's high moral character is something that sets her apart from her peers. She is confident in her beliefs, and she will not compromise those beliefs to enhance her standing in the eyes of others. This is not a quality that is common among young people today.”

Wenger's future plans include attending Waynesburg University to major in early childhood education and to play for the WU softball team. After college she plans to become an elementary school teacher.
