Elaine Gazda, professor of classical art and archaeology in the Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan and curator of Hellenistic and Roman Antiquities at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology, will present Exhibiting the Romans at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology on Wednesday, April 21, at the College of Wooster. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Lean Lecture Room of Wishart Hall (303 E. University St.) at 7 p.m. Gazda, who will speak about the installation of the new William E. Upjohn Exhibit Wing at the Kelsey Museum, specializes in Roman art, especially that of the private sphere. She has just completed the new installation of the collections of the Kelsey Museum, which is home to nearly 100,000 ancient and medieval objects from the Mediterranean region. The installation examines ancient Mediterranean cultures and the interactions between them, emphasizing trade, travel, and other forms of cultural connections and exchange. Gazda has curated numerous exhibitions and has published many books and articles, including The Ancient Art of Emulation: Studies in Artistic Originality and Tradition from the Present to the Classical Age (2002), Roman Art in the Private Sphere (1991), and The Roman Port of Cosa: A Center of Ancient Trade (1987).
