Thomas Long, the Bandy Professor of Preaching at Emory University’s Chandler School of Theology in Atlanta, will present A Matter of Depth at the College of Wooster’s annual Baccalaureate service on Sunday, May 9, at 10 a.m., in McGaw Chapel. A graduate of Erskine Seminary and Princeton Theological Seminary, Long specializes in homiletical theory and biblical hermeneutics as well as the theology and practice of Christian funerals. An ordained Presbyterian minister and a former associate editor of the Journal for Preachers, Long has authored more than a dozen publications, including The Witness of Preaching, Testimony: Talking Ourselves into Being Christian and Beyond the Worship Wars: Building Vital and Faithful Worship. He is also the chair of the Day1 Advisory Board, consisting of prominent preachers, scholars, and other leaders. Long began his career as a preacher at McElroy Presbyterian Church near Atlanta, and since that time has taught at a number of seminaries, including Princeton, Columbia, and Candler. In 1996, he was named one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world by Baylor University, along with the likes of Billy Graham, Fred Craddock, James Forbes, Barbara Brown Taylor, and William Willimon. He was ordained by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, and his ordination is currently held by the PCUSA.
