East Holmes Local Schools recently announced the appointment of Sarah Sommers as the new vocal music teacher and choir director at Hiland Middle and High School and fifth/sixth grade at Berlin, Walnut Creek and Winesburg elementary schools.

With a background in music education, Sommers brings talent and experience to this position.

Born in Hartville, Sommers later moved to Dalton with her family and has been a resident of Wayne County ever since. She said she is thrilled to have found an opportunity close to home in a school district known for its commitment to vocal and choral traditions.

Sommers’ journey in the education field began with her graduation from the University of Akron, where she obtained a Bachelor of Music in Music Education in December 2022. She recently served as a long-term substitute choir teacher in Berkshire Local Schools in Burton, Ohio.

Music has always played a significant role in Sommers’ life. While her first instrument was the violin, she also has been involved in singing with her family and performing with local and traveling choirs from a young age.

During high school Sommers started teaching violin lessons and provided Suzuki Violin education in private studio instruction for over 22 years. As her focus shifted toward vocal and choral performance, she became increasingly passionate about sharing her love for music with others, ultimately leading her to pursue a music education degree centered around vocal/choral music.

In her new role as vocal music teacher and choir director, Sommers is dedicated to building upon the musical excellence at Hiland Middle and High School. She believes music forms the backdrop for significant milestones, emotions and cherished memories. Her goal is to empower students to confidently participate in these moments, whether it be in professional settings, with friends, in places of worship or as they pass down their love for music to future generations.

When asked about her appointment, Sommers said, “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to get to know the families and students of Hiland Middle and High School.”

East Holmes Local Schools is confident Sommers’ expertise, passion and dedication will contribute to the continued growth of the vocal and choral programs at Hiland Middle and High School.

“Sarah’s passion for choral excellence aligns perfectly with our district’s commitment to providing exceptional opportunities for our students. We look forward to witnessing the positive impact Sarah will have on our students and the continued growth of our vocal and choral programs,” said Erik Beun, EH Schools superintendent.
