Engineering Expo contest winners named

The Kent State University at Tuscarawas Engineering Technology Department announced the winners of five competitions for area high school students during the Engineering Technology Opportunity Exposition held Feb. 20. The students were trained in digital electronics, computer-aided design, animation/multimedia, video game design and robotics. The submitted entries were judged by a committee of local industry leaders, high school teachers and campus faculty. First place winners were awarded $200 and the second place winners were awarded $100. In addition, winners who placed first, second and third were awarded a scholarship for $1,500, $1,000 and $750 respectively. The fourth and fifth place students were awarded a tuition voucher for a business and community services course. Digital electronics students constructed working digital stopwatches using the computer and electronic facilities at the campus. They learned the basics of AutoCAD, printed circuited board fabrication and soldering/desoldering techniques. The winners for digital electronics: Nathan Glowacki from Dover High School, first place; Kaylee Dudek from Sandy Valley High School, second place; Caleb Miller from Coshocton County Career Center, third place; Courtney Dunfee from Coshocton County Career Center, fourth place; and Dakota Walker from Coshocton County Career Center, fifth place. Entries for the CAD competition were based on themes given to the students during the training session. Students completed entries in the robotics and automation, theater backdrop, transportation, historical, futuristic and logo categories. The computer-aided design winners are: Carolann Wengerd from Garaway High School, first place; Dakota Kirtley from Tuscarawas Valley High School, second place; Ryan Reneker from Buckeye Career Center, third place; and Kyle Marion from Sandy Valley High School, fourth place. The multimedia competition created simple, functional websites using production standards by incorporating color and design theory. Students in the animation design competition challenged students to combine computer graphics and sound files into a media presentation. The animation/multimedia winners are: Matthew Maize from Claymont High School, first place; and Ashlin King from Claymont High School and Rebecca Roth from Indian Valley High School, second place. The video game design competition winners are: Griffin Hayes from New Philadelphia High School, first place; Darian Clugston from Tuscarawas Valley High School, second place; Christian Hess from Buckeye Career Center, third place; Austin McClain from Coshocton High School, fourth place; and Preston Hayes from Tuscarawas Valley High School, fifth place. Students in the robotics competition designed and constructed working robots using Lego Mindstorm kits. These robots have various functions such as motion light sensing and obstacle detection. The robotics winners are: Dakota Kirtley from Tuscarawas Valley High School, first place; Landon Nardi from Conotton Valley High School, second place; Nate Ackerman from Tuscarawas Valley High School, third place; and Austin Owens from Sandy Valley High School, fourth place.
