Faith and Society Lecture Series to host philosopher
Francis J. Beckwith is professor of philosophy and church-state studies at Baylor University, where he also serves as associate director of the graduate program in philosophy. He is the author of more than 100 academic articles, book chapters, reference entries and reviews.
Philosopher, professor and author Francis J. Beckwith will speak on the topic, “A Heartbeat Away: The Supreme Court and the Future of Roe v. Wade” on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Jack & Deb Miller Chapel at Ashland University.
The presentation, which is free and open to the public, is part of the university’s Faith and Society Lecture Series, sponsored by the Hilda E. Bretzlaff Foundation.

Among his nearly 20 books are “Never Doubt Thomas: The Catholic Aquinas as Evangelical and Protestant” (Baylor University Press, 2019), “Defending Life: A Moral and Legal Case Against Abortion Choice” (Cambridge University Press, 2007), “Return to Rome: Confessions of an Evangelical Catholic” (Brazos Press, 2009), “Politics for Christians: Statecraft as Soulcraft” (IVP, 2010) and “Taking Rites Seriously: Law, Politics and the Reasonableness of Faith” (Cambridge University Press, 2015).
Beckwith is the winner of the American Academy of Religion’s 2016 Book Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion in Constructive-Reflective Studies.
A Master of Juridical Studies graduate of the Washington University School of Law in St. Louis, as well as Fordham University, where he earned master’s and doctoral degrees in philosophy, Beckwith has held visiting appointments at the University of Colorado, Boulder, the University of Notre Dame and Princeton University.
