The Fireside Readers Book Group at The University of Akron Wayne College has selected five books to read and discuss during the spring semester. The group will hold its next meeting on Monday, Feb. 1, in the Wayne College Community Room, from 7-8:30 p.m. The group will continue to discuss memoirs, with March’s selection being True Compass, by Edward M. Kennedy. Participants may reserve a copy of this book by contacting their local public library or by becoming a community member borrower at the Wayne College library. Son of the Revolution, by Liange Heng and Judith Shapiro, is the book chosen for the March meeting. In April, the group will discuss Dorothea Lange: A Life Beyond Limits, by Linda Gordon. The May selection will be A Mighty Long Way: My Journey to Justice at Little Rock Central High School, by Carlotta Walls LaNier, and the group will wrap up the academic year in June by reading We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese, by Elizabeth M. Norman. Maureen Lerch, manager of library services at Wayne College, enjoys the Fireside Readers Group and encourages new members to join. “It isn’t a huge commitment. We want people to join us even if they haven’t had time to finish the book,” said Lerch. “We’re a very relaxed organization so we hope everyone will feel welcome. Plus, we always have snacks.” For more information about the discussion group or to be added to the e-mail list, contact Lerch at 330-684-8951 or mlerch@uakron.edu.
