Foreign Language Club hosts annual banquet
Smithville High School Foreign Language Club held its annual banquet at The Pines Restaurant. The theme was Mexican, and the room was decorated with traditional Mexican decorations including the national flag.
Students arrived in costumes portraying characters connected to German, Hispanic or Latino cultures. World language teachers Joni Reichenbach and Lisa Howie were assisted by Glen Reichenbach, Bill Howie, Kim Dannemiller, Kevin Trent and Marcia Trent in judging the costumes for authenticity and originality.
The winners, who then reigned over the banquet, were King Caleb Hostetler (Don Quixote de Marshallville), Queen Holly Blough (Frau Reichenbach), Prince Alex Taylor (Mariachi's ghost) and Princess Brooke Young (Cow from Schleswig-Holstein).
The meal was an authentic Mexican buffet, featuring ceviche and jicama as appetizers; chicken enchiladas with mole sauce, carnitas, stewed beef, stuffed peppers, beans, rice, salad, guacamole, artichoke, jalapeño dip and a tortilla bowl to put it all in; and apple strudel and rice pudding for dessert.
After the meal there was a program of comical skits in German and Spanish. Spanish acts were, “¿Puedo ir al baño?,” “Dora y Diego,” “SpongeBob Shakespeare,” “Un minuto para ganar” and “Seal of Biliteracy.” German acts were “Deutschland hat Talent,” “Tattoos Gone Wrong,” “Titanic,” “Vo hast du das gekriegt?” and “Keine Ahnung!”
The event was planned by the Foreign Language Club officers: President Caleb Hostetler, Vice President Lindsey Erickson, secretary Josh Fath, treasurers Isabel Steiner and Sydney Tekempel, and activities director Brooke Aukerman.
The program covers were designed by Imzadia Conrad and Bailee McCullough.
