Getting a college education is more important than ever in today’s tough job market, but finding the money for college can be challenging. In an effort to help students start the sometimes overwhelming financial aid search, The University of Akron Wayne College is offering financial aid workshops at a variety of times and dates to help students complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid, including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans, as well as the need-based state grants. Studies show that a student is 50 percent more likely to attend college when they complete the FAFSA. While walk-ins are welcome, families are encouraged to register in advance for the free workshop that best fits their schedule: Feb. 4, March 3 and April 14, from 9 a.m. to noon. FAFSA workshops: Computer Lab A225, main building, 1901 Smucker Road, Orrville. Register by calling the Wayne College student services office at 330-684-8942. Feb. 12, at 2 p.m. College Goal Sunday: Holmes County Higher Education Center, 88-B E. Jackson St., Millersburg. Register at http://www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org or by calling 800-233-6734. Bring a photo ID and 2011 federal tax returns for student and parents, or W2s if taxes have not been completed, as well as your social security number, 2011 untaxed income records, other records of money earned, current bank statements and investment records. The deadline for the Wayne College Scholarship Application is March 1 and is available online at www.wayne.uakron.edu/a_financialaid.htm.
