Garaway BOE discusses air conditioning in schools

At the April 15 board meeting, Garaway Superintendent Dr. James Millet reported a meeting will be held to inquire about providing air-conditioning for all the school buildings. He said projects continue in the district and noted a bus driver is needed. He also thanked the principals and teachers for addressing the curriculum needs mandated by the state.

The board approved administrative contract renewals for Tonie Horn, psychology intern, and Cindy Weiss, school psychologist, each one year; Natalie Smith, five separate duties, a three-year contract; and Sedric Gerber, Ragersville and Baltic Elementary principal, and Mollie Parisi, special education director and federal programs coordinator, both five years.

The board also did the following:

—Approved administrative contracts for Kelli Troyer, executive secretary to the superintendent, from 248-260 days and Scott Sauernheimer, contract addendum to eight hours in cafeteria and full-time summer custodian.

—Accepted the retirements of Leslie Yoder, math teacher for seventh grade through 12th grade, effective June 1, and Jean Meyers, hall monitor for seventh grade through 12th grade, effective May 31, and the resignation of Cyrus Copeland, science teacher, effective at the end of the 2023-24 school year.

—Gave approval of classified contracts to Denae Olinger, one year for Ragersville Elementary, and Daisie Cline, to head cook; Faith Miller, floater cook; and Nocole Fender, cook, one-year contract for all for the child nutrition department.

—Rescinded a contract to Mechelle Gross, spring musical director.

—Issued one-year athletic supplemental coaching contracts to Mikayla Johnson, boys golf; Jason Wallick, varsity head football; Andrew Stahl, seventh-grade boys basketball; Brooks Numbers, varsity girls head basketball; Justin Elmore, varsity head baseball; and Zach Mottice, varsity head track.

—Passed a resolution to disband committee appointments. Board member Bob Hannon cast a no vote.

—Approved M. Miller General Construction to add a divider wall in the computer lab to make two classrooms at Ragersville Elementary at a cost of $6,800.

—Gave approval to Nulook Coatings for epoxy coating for two restrooms each at Baltic Elementary and high school/middle school and to reseal the epoxy coating for the art room and cafeteria at Dundee Elementary at a cost of $8,050 for all schools.

—Agreed to enter a contract with Beachy Concrete LLC for demolition and replacement of the concrete in the hallway at Ragersville Elementary at a cost of $11,837.

—Approved a contract with Midland Brightwood for toilet partitions at the high school/middle school and Baltic Elementary for $10,230.

—Agreed to a contract with Country Floors Warehouse for flooring in Baltic Elementary, preschool, kindergarten, English/language arts for fourth grade through sixth grade and school office at a cost of $17,935.

—Entered into a contract with the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections to use the Garaway Belden Center to be a polling location for Sugarcreek village and township.

—Renewed the EMS LINQ LLC contract for all CMS Hosting and Instant Connect at a cost of $5,101. This is for the website and the all-call system.

—Gave approval to Union Hospital Cleveland Clinic WorkWell to perform physicals for district bus and van drivers and Occupational Medicine Center of Tuscarawas County to perform quarterly random drug testing for bus and van drivers.

—Approved Title III El Consortium contract with Stark County Educational Service Center from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.

—Heard the board approved 18 three-year certified contract renewals, five two-year and 12 one-year contracts.

—Approved 18 two-year classified contract renewals.

Other information

The board recognized March Student of the Month recipients William Miller, high school; Parker Weiland, middle school; Deegan Yoder, fine arts; and Clayton Downs, athlete.

The board accepted a donation of $1,268 from the Garaway Athletic Boosters to the athletic department for baseball uniforms.

The next meeting will be held May 20 at 6 p.m. in the high school library.
