The 16th president will be at The University of Akron Wayne College delivering his famous Gettysburg Address as one of many attractions to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The event takes place from 1-4 p.m. at the Barnet-Hoover Farmhouse on campus, and is free and open to the public. Joining President Lincoln that day is his wife, Mary Todd, and abolitionist Harriet Tubman, who will tell how she helped free slaves through the Underground Railroad. Take a stroll through a Civil War campsite, set up by the 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry Company E, and talk to soldiers about their experiences at war. Meet a surgeon and see the medical equipment used in field hospitals. Listen to musician Steven Ball as he plays his 1860 Martin guitar and shares the history behind the songs he plays. Plus, see Civil War fashions, an exhibit by the Orrville Historical Society, and enjoy noted Civil War historian Jimmie Epling as he recounts significant events of the war. Food and activities round out the day’s offerings, making it a fun event for the whole family. For more information, visit http://wayne.uakron.edu, email civilwar@uakron.edu or call 330-684-8729. RSVPs are appreciated, but not required for attendance.
