Due to high demand, Historic Zoar Village and Fort Laurens will again host summer history camps for both children and adults. Campers will be able to explore life on the Ohio frontier through hands-on activities, demonstrations and storytelling from costumed historical interpreters.

“Traditionally offered for kids, last year we added an adult camp to accommodate the many requests we had from educators and grown-up history buffs who also wanted to learn more about local history,” said Tammi Mackey-Shrum, site director. “No matter our age, we learn about the past best when we can touch, see, feel and even taste the way life was several generations ago.”

Children’s History Camp will be July 11-13. Kids between the age of 5 and 12 can learn about the area’s heritage from 1-4 p.m.

Each day has a different theme.

Wednesday, July 11 is "Life in Zoar (1817-98)" and will feature demonstrations and activities including baking, butter churning, soap carving, tinsmithing and gardening. Participants will learn about the Society of Separatists that founded Zoar and village life during the 1850s.

Thursday, July 12 is "Life on the Ohio & Erie Canal (1820s to 1913)" and will include a walk along the Ohio & Erie Canalway Towpath Trail, a discussion about how the Society of Separatists helped build the canal, and how it provided the local area with greater access to national trade.

Friday, July 13 is "Life at Fort Laurens (1778-79)" and will include an interactive Revolutionary War encampment where kids can dress up as soldiers and perform daily chores. Campers will learn about why the fort was built and what events led to its eventual abandonment.

The cost is $10 per child per day or $25 for all three days, which includes an afternoon snack. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 330-874-3011 or 800-262-6195. Reservations must be made by July 7.

Camp days on July 11 and 12 are located at 198 Main St. in Zoar. The July 13 camp is located at 11067 Fort Laurens Road NW in Bolivar.

Adult History Camp will be July 17-20. Adults 18 and older can learn about the area’s heritage.

Each day has a different theme.

Tuesday, July 17 is "Zoar Village Guided Tour," which will provide campers with an overview of Zoar’s history and an up-close view of several preserved historical buildings. This is an extended version of Zoar’s traditional walking tour.

Wednesday, July 18 is "Life in Zoar (1817-98)" and will feature demonstrations and activities including baking, butter churning, soap carving, tinsmithing and gardening. Participants will learn about the Society of Separatists that founded Zoar and village life during the 1850s.

Friday, July 20 is "Life at Fort Laurens (1778-79)" and will include an interactive Revolutionary War encampment where participants can dress up as soldiers and perform daily chores. Campers will learn about why the fort was built and what events led to its eventual abandonment.
