Huffman earns national teacher award
The National Council for the Social Studies recently announced Kimberly Huffman, Wayne County Schools Career Center government teacher, as the recipient of the 2022 NCSS Secondary Teacher of the Year. The award is presented annually to a teacher who has made outstanding contributions in teaching social studies to secondary students.
According to a press release, Huffman has demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication to her profession. She was recognized for her teaching style, which incorporates a range of creative activities and instructional strategies to help students develop a deeper understanding of social studies concepts.
Huffman was celebrated at the 102nd annual NCSS Conference, where she was honored for her work in the field of social studies education. At the conference she hosted a collaborative session on professional development, sharing her insights and experiences with other educators from across the country.
Her entry for the award included a lesson plan on First Amendment Protection of Student Speech, which demonstrated her commitment to providing students with a deep understanding of social studies concepts and their real-world applications. The lesson plan was praised by the award committee for its creativity, relevance and effectiveness.

Founded in 1921, National Council for the Social Studies is the largest professional association in the country devoted solely to social studies education.
