Indian Valley student honored with Harstine Scholarship
Abigail Adams was honored with The Annette Kay Harstine Memorial Scholarship. She has attended Indian Valley Local Schools for the past 13 years.
Music has always been a major influence in her life. At the age of 8 she began taking piano lessons in her hometown, and from a young age she was involved in local children's ensembles such as the Tuscarawas Philharmonic Children's Chorus and the Greater Tuscarawas County Children's Choir.
In middle school she began to play French horn in the band and sing in the choir. She also became a member of the worship team at her church: Uhrichsville Christian Fellowship.
In high school Adams has been a member of Indian Valley's marching band, the IV drama club, the IV vocal jazz ensemble, the National Honor Society, the Dominic Greco Band and the Tuscarawas Philharmonic Orchestra.
Adams also was chosen as a finalist to perform at Carnegie Hall NYC in the spring of her junior year, and this fall she will attend the University of Mount Union to pursue a degree in music education.
The Annette Kay Harstine Memorial Scholarship was founded in March 1996 when Annette Harstine, who was 16 years old, died in an automobile accident. She was a passenger in a vehicle with a drunk driver. Her family and members of the Tuscarawas County Junior Fortnightly Music Club began the scholarship, using memorial gifts to fund the scholarship.
A recital is presented yearly by the members of the Junior Music Club to help perpetuate the scholarship. The total amount paid out for scholarships since 1996 is $10,100.
