For the third time in the 2009-2010 academic year, a teacher from the Wooster City School District has received statewide recognition for his dedication to his students. Kean Elementary School physical education teacher and district swim coach Jeff DeHaan has been named the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the Month for December 2009. The Ohio Lottery’s Teacher of the Month award recognizes outstanding teachers for their dedication, professionalism and work on behalf of the state’s young people. Each month, the organization recognizes one teacher in each of nine geographic regions across the state of Ohio based on contributions to their school, excellence in the classroom, leadership abilities, citizenship, community involvement and a variety of other criteria. DeHaan was nominated for the honor by Peg Butler, Kean Elementary School principal, who noted that DeHaan “promotes physical activity for all students, making adaptations to equipment when needed and modifications to activities so that all students may participate. “Jeff participates in schoolwide community service projects from the planning to the implementation stages,” said Butler. “His collaboration with school staff is commendable. “Jeff does a great job teaching and modeling a healthy lifestyle for all of our students,” Butler added. “As our school district’s swim coach, Jeff instills leadership, cooperation and team skills in our youth.” “I am so excited to be selected as the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the month for December,” said DeHaan. “I really enjoy teaching and the opportunity to work with others.” DeHaan was recognized for his achievement by the Wooster City School District Board of Education during its Jan. 27 meeting. During the meeting, DeHaan expressed his appreciation for the support he has received from the district during his long career. “I want to thank the administration and the board of education for allowing me to do the two things I love for the last 13 years, and that is teach physical education and coach high school swimming,” said DeHaan. As Teacher of the Month, DeHaan received a certificate of excellence, four tickets to the Jan. 3 Cleveland Browns game and recognition during the game. An article about his accomplishments and his photo will also be posted on the Ohio Lottery Web site. DeHaan is the third teacher from the Wooster City School District to receive the prestigious Teacher of the Month honors this school year. DeHaan’s colleague at Kean Elementary, second-grade teacher Julie Beckett, was named the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the Month for September 2009. The following month, Melrose Elementary second-grade teacher Juanita Booker was named Teacher of the Month for October. “To have three Teacher of the Month awards already for this school year is a tremendous accomplishment for the entire district,” said Superintendent Michael Tefs. “Our teachers and principals are truly embracing our mission to inspire world-class academic achievement.” For information on the Ohio Lottery Teacher of the Month award, visit the Web site at www.ohiolottery.com.
