Fairless Board of Education passed a resolution of necessity to submit the renewal of a substitute tax levy to the Stark County auditor to certify a millage rate to raise an initial amount of $1,773,760. The amount currently being raised is $1,883,460 in collection year 2025 (tax year 2024).

At the June 18 meeting, the board agreed to pass a second resolution once the millage is certified to place the levy on the Nov. 4 ballot.

Superintendent Michael Hearn said the levy was originally passed in November 2015 for a term of 10 years and first placed on the tax list and duplicate tax year 2016 for collection from 2017-26.

In another matter the board accepted the resignations of Michele Short, classified instructional aide, effective July 31, and Rose Hammel, teacher, effective at the end of the 2024-25 school year. The board granted one-year certified teaching contracts to Erin Moir, sixth grade math, and Andrew Rumancik, intervention specialist.

In other business

The board granted one-year supplemental coaching contracts to Chad Butcher, varsity assistant football; Wesley Yoder, middle school football; Gary Milton and Brandon Shook, junior high football; and Gary Milton and Chad Butcher, varsity assistant boys basketball.

The board issued one-year supplemental coaching contracts to nondistrict teachers Ryan Murphy, varsity assistant football; Pamela Gerig, junior high cross country; Amanda Brinley, junior high cheer fall and winter; Timothy Wade, reserve boys basketball; Scott Vetrone, junior high boys basketball; and Olivia Jeffers, freshman volleyball.

The board agreed to participate and authorize the Stark County Schools Council to advertise and received bids for school buses and/or vans. Hearn said it is not the intent to purchase a bus this year.

The board approved 2026 temporary appropriations of $30,307,000.

The board approved 96 students to attend the district through open enrollment for the 2025-26 school year.

The board adopted a resolution that it is not the district’s intent to provide career-technical education to students enrolled in seventh grade and eighth grade to attend College Credit Plus classes.

The board approved the kindergarten to 12th grade student handbook and the 2025 revised Fairless athletic handbook.

The board approved a maintenance agreement for water treatment with Gardiner for all three buildings, beginning June 1 to May 31, 2026, at a cost of $2,880.

The board rescinded the employment for Leah Rinder, custodian, for the 2025-26 school year.

The board agreed to increase the substitute teacher rate for $110 per day beginning with the 2025-26 school year.

The board approved an agreement with SPARCC for basic services at $42,249, building automation services and support at $24,820, INFOhio services at $2,368, Final Forms at $6,789, and IEP Anywhere at $2,630.

There will be a special meeting June 27 at 7:30 a.m. in the Fairless Board of Education offices. The next regular meeting will be Aug. 19 at 6:15 p.m. at the high school, 800 Seventh St. SE, Brewster. The July 15 meeting has been canceled.
